“The Florida economy is set for a solid rebound in activity in 2021 and 2022 as key sectors come back online,” Robert Dye, chief economist for Comerica, noted in a recent email to clients. “While the state has further diversified its economy in recent years, the downturn in tourism was still a significant drag on the overall Florida economy in 2020.”
It hurt even more that Florida tourism was on a roll, with 2019 being a record year. More than 131 million visitors added nearly $97 billion to the state’s economy. From 2015 on, nearly 300 hotels and more than 9,500 new restaurants opened.
As 2021 began, the pickup was becoming more pronounced. In March, Orlando International Airport saw a nearly 25% increase in passengers compared to the same month a year earlier.
